I often find myself going back to an amazing little book entitled Humility written by Andrew Murray. This is an excerpt taken from this book;“In the Gospel of John we have the inner life of our Lord laid open to us. Jesus speaks frequently of His relation to the Father, of the motives by which He is guided, of His consciousness of the power and spirit in which He acts. Though the word humble does not occur, we shall nowhere in Scripture see so clearly wherein His humility consisted. We have already said that this grace is in truth nothing but that simple consent of the creature to let God be all, in virtue of which it surrenders itself to His working alone. In Jesus we shall see how both as the Son of God in heaven, and as man upon earth, He took the place of entire subordination, and gave God the honor and the glory which is due to Him- And what He taught so often was made true to Himself: "He that humbleth him: shall be exalted." As it is written, "He humbled Himself, therefore God highly exalted Him."
Is that not wonderful? In this regard we contemplate verses that open us to the deepest roots of Christ’s life and work that he became nothing so that God might be all. This life of submission and dependence on the will of God, Jesus found to be one of perfect peace and joy. In truth he lost nothing by giving all to God.
For Jesus humility was not a temporary sentiment, but the very spirit of His whole life. Interestingly enough Jesus was just as humble in his interaction with men as he was with God. Are we?
So the question I suspect we need ask ourselves is, are you and I clothed with humility? Perhaps we need to be truthfully investigating our daily lives, asking Jesus, and our friends and actively choose humility in our daily walk.
Verses that I find myself pondering over are; John 5:19; “The Son can do nothing by himself”. John 5:30; “I can do nothing on my own. I judge as God tells me. Therefore, my judgment is just, because I carry out the will of the One who sent me, not my own will”. John 5:41; “Your approval means nothing to me” in other words “I receive not glory from men”. John 6:38; “For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will”.
Finally, and just as importantly for those of us who preach the Word of God; John 7:16 says; “So Jesus told them , “My message is not my own; it comes from God who sent me”. Food for thought this is too me, and you.......? |
