Grants Story

I was born in Durban, South Africa, and was raised in a wonderful Christian family. My first experience with the Lord was in Empangeni, Zululand, where a wonderful man of God, Neville Pringle, sowed the seed in my formative years. I started playing music semi–professionally in my teens and turned professional in the early 1980’s. We played clubs predominantly in Durban, and it was a time where I slid back into the world. It was cool then, but when I look back now, I made mistake after mistake, and was on my own mission, communing with the Lord only when I was in trouble.

I got a “real” job in 1989 and moved into the FMCG industry which led me to Cape Town. I played for a band called Night Shuttle which was a lot of fun. After a failed marriage (solely due to my 'worldly' ways) to a fantastic lady, I started to realise that I wasn't the great guy I thought I was. I had started writing my own material as a youngster but started to escalate this in the1980’s from the start of my professional music career. In 2000 I met up with James Stewart of The Usual and, with his assistance; put an EP together featuring 3 of my songs. The EP received immediate airplay on several community stations and before I knew it we were putting an album together. Also in 2000 I married Sally which was a blessing of note, and then Cara, Sal, and I were joined by little Chelsea born at the Sandton Clinic on the 10th April of the same year.

I released my first album Diversity an Acoustic Rock – styled collection in September 2003 and it got to third place in the South African SAMP3 Album Charts. The featured track “Time to Change” peaked at number 2 on the SAMP3 charts being for the most downloaded mp3’s at that time. The album received great media support with my favourite review being that of Sylvester Haskins of The Star newspaper writing; “Positively kicking with energy, Grant Nuss’s Diversity is a hit!” Thanks Sylvester!

Miraculously the Lord decided that my life had gone too far off the rails, drew me back, and, almost immediately, led me to Lagos Nigeria. The follow up album to Diversity, Beyond the Sky was released in March 2006. The album was a collection of Contemporary Christian Rock songs written in Cape Town and Lagos as the Lord used me as a Worship Leader there. The album included the amazing contemporary song Deeper featuring Tom Fox [Bright Blue / The Usual] on guitar and keyboards, Peter Cohen [Mango Groove/Freshlyground] on drums, and James Stewart [The Usual] on backing vocals.

Deeper received much airplay throughout 2006 both on secular and Christian stations alike, charting on a couple of them. Beyond the Sky was listed at most leading secular and Christian music retailers throughout South Africa.

Souled Out…For Jesus was released in 2007 and is different in both style and musicianship. It features a collection of Praise and Worship songs which have received quite a bit of airplay of late throughout the country.  In March 2008 the Lord made it clear that I needed to follow His path into full – time Ministry which I have done. We were attached to the Protea Valley Family Church.

Thanks to an amazing couple through whom the Lord has worked, I have been able to study at Cornerstone Christian College toward my Bachelor of Theology degree which I hope to finalise at the end of this year. The College is an absolute blessing to all who attend it. We are a family in the true sense of the word. The staff and faculty are of the finest, and nicest people one could hope to meet, and an example to us all. Should you be considering studying further you will not go wrong at Cornerstone! Mail or contact Hayley Friend for further information.

Where to from here? It has been made clear to Sally and I by God that we are to venture out to Fish Hoek and to be a part of the Full Gospel church family there. It is an amazing church and reminds us of our fellowship in Ghana which we absolutely thrived in. The folk and community make it 'home' for all who walk through the doors - awesome!

We have just completed a sponsored EP for radio-play which has got to be the most blessed production yet! It is a limited - edition recording and we will be selling it on for R50 per copy.
